Language course

Language Courses

  • What happens on my first day?
The first day of school is organised slightly differently for each school but full details of your first day will be detailed in your Student Guide once you have enrolled. New students will be welcomed on arrival and given a short introduction on the school and location. Students are then asked to sit a placement test to enable them to be placed into the correct class for their level. Some schools ask you to complete a test in advance of arrival, if this is the case we will send you this test once you have enrolled. Once your level is determined classes will commence. Some schools have an orientation tour of the city on the first day for new students. This is very useful and it is worth checking the activities board on arrival for information on this. If in any doubt, don`t be afraid to ask.

  • When can I start the course?
Up to you! Courses normally start each Monday of every month. There are specific start dates for beginners, please refer to the start dates for your chosen school for this information.

  • Will I get a certificate at the end of my course?
Yes, nearly all of the language schools will provide you with a certificate of attendance at the end of your course.
  • Can I sit language exams whilst on my course?
Certainly, most of the schools provide exam preparation courses for International recognised language exams. Please contact us for more details.
  • Will lessons be conducted entirely in the target language?
Yes, teachers and staff at the language schools will only speak in the target language as this is the best way for you to learn the language and is part of the total immersion process. In the case of an emergency they will of course resort to English.

Accommodation

Accommodation

  • What are the host families like?
Schools offer a range of families, single parents, retired couples, professional couples, all of which are carefully selected and vetted by the school.

  • How far is my accommodation from the school?
This varies depending on the location. In small cities students can have accommodation within walking distance, anywhere between 5-30 minutes walk. In larger cities students may need to take public transport from their accommodation to the school. In either case we can give you advice on travelling to school.
  • Will I need to pay a deposit for an apartment?
Some of the language schools will ask you to provide a refundable deposit (providing nothing is lost or damaged) at the start of your course. This information will be given to you in your Student Guide once you have enrolled on your course.
  • Can I arrange my own accommodation?
Certainly! You do not have to book accommodation with us. If you have family or friends that live in the country or you are going to arrange you own accommodation you are welcome to do so.

Languages Level

Language Level

  • How do I know what my language level is?
Please check our language level reference to work out your current language ability. Alternatively, if you are unsure of your language level contact us and we will be happy to advise you. In any case  all non-beginners will take a language test on their first day to assess their language ability and some schools like students to complete a test in advance of their course. We will notify you of this once you enrol on your chosen course and provide you with details of how to complete the test in advance where required.

  • How much will I improve my language skills on a course?
This is always a difficult question to answer because everyone's rate of learning is different. Of course you will get as much out of your course as you put in. We can help provide you with the best environment to learn the language but we cannot learn it for you. This  aside the schools do state that students following a standard group course should be able to progress a level in approximately 4 to 6 weeks for the lower levels and 6 to 10 weeks for the more advanced levels. If you would like more clarification on this, please give us a call, we are happy to help.

Travel

Travel

  • Do you arrange flights?
No, as most Airline companies offer good deals on flights we do not book the flights for you. We are happy to advise you on flight times, airlines and the best airports to flight in to, so please feel free to ask us.

  • Can I book a transfer?
Yes, most of the Language Schools offer a transfer service, whether this be your host family meeting you at the airport, a representative of the school collecting you or an independent transfer company. Live Languages Abroad recommends that you take advantage of this service, especially on arrival and if you are a beginner to make your arrival as stress free as possible.
